Remember Those Days
Interview with Richard Kincaid
Attended JHS 1963, 1964, 1966, 1967
[Not recorded] This is Jen Weidner of the Jeffersonville Township Public Library, I'm conducting interviews for Remember Those Days Jeffersonville high School 1950-1970 oral history project with a grant from the Indiana Genealogical Society. My friend Amanda Kincaid helped me with this interview of her dad, Richard Kincaid due to the Covid-19 global pandemic.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 0:14 What is your name and age, if you don't mind?
Richard Kincaid 0:15 Richard Kincaid, age 71.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 0:17 What years did you attend Jeffersonville High School on Court Avenue?
Richard Kincaid 0:29 [19]63 and [19]64 and [19]66.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 0:47 How many students were in your graduating class for an estimate?
Richard Kincaid 0:55 About 120 or so.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 1:00 Did you participate in any sports or clubs?
Richard Kincaid 1:05 No.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 1:07 What do you remember about the school classrooms, teachers, school grounds, etc?
Richard Kincaid 1:12 It was old. [laughing] Jeffersonville High School was old, I do remember that. But, hum, I guess. I don't know what else would be assist. But they had three or four different buildings, that you actually went in and the old school. They had like, fine arts and auto shop and I don't remember a wood shop. I never saw it. But anyway and then the main building was out there, facing Court Avenue. Okay, and then the Fieldhouse, of course.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 1:15 Was that like a, like a gym, was that like their equivalent of having a gym?
Richard Kincaid 2:00 Yea, just like having a gym.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 2:01 I didn't know that.
Richard Kincaid 2:02 Yeah, that was, you know, it had a swimming pool, under the basketball court. I always heard that, I never saw it. Yeah, they had an old swimming pool and they had timbers. Yeah, you can imagine the unknown amount of people that would be walking on it. It better be awfully strong, but they, it had. The old Field house had a swimming pool, under the basketball court, that was inside where they played the ball games. Now that's something a lot of people may not even know. But I remembered.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 2:43 Did you have a favorite class or subject?
Richard Kincaid 2:48 Yeah, psychology.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 2:50 Really? Why was it your favorite?
Richard Kincaid 2:56 I believe because it was a little harder to understand. The other ones were too easy to understand and I will surely liked it. If you just tell me a little, I'd go find out what I need to know. But if it didn't mean anything to me, I didn’t care.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 3:13 Do you have any fond memories of high school?
Richard Kincaid 3:18 Oh yeah. Now we're talking about Jeff High School. Remember I went to two, Okay, I went to Valley. Yeah, I liked some of the dumb sounding things. I liked Pep sessions because it took me out of school for a while and then I got to go home and they would not. That felt pretty good.
Ballgames are pretty neat too.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 3:48 Did you, did your siblings, go there. Did they play sports there?
Richard Kincaid 3:53 Yeah. No, no, now Steven played basketball from home, but not for a team like school.
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 4:04 Anything else you want to add?
Richard Kincaid 4:10 Oh yeah, the main building had the top floor on it. I don't know what happened, it was like sloped down or something. And I remember you could see it from the side you know. You could see it go like, and everybody said “Ah, it's old as Methuselah, don't pay attention to it. [laughing]
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 4:49 Did you go to prom?
Richard Kincaid 4:53 The only time I got to go to prom, well no, wait a minute. I was 19 when I went to prom. Now I went to Valley’s, but that was kind of in the background helping put things together and stuff like that. I didn't go
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 5:12 You graduated from Jeff not Valley, right?
Richard Kincaid 5:15 Jeffersonville, yeah
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 5:16 What year?
Richard Kincaid 5:17 1967
Amanda Kincaid-Prentice 5:20 Awesome. Thanks.
